The square category comprises letters constructed from a square module, generally with a low level of formal complexity and with a preferential use of capital letters. This classification was established by Finizola (2010) during the survey Typographical Panorama of Vernacular Lettering: a case study in the city of Recife. The categories are fluid and the same sign may present characteristics of more than one style.
